Three second round games in the club championship were played on Monday 8th January 2024 to kick off the new year.
Sandy and new member Gerry Davis played a few friendlies with Sandy taking taking the honours.
Club Championship
With Richard about to win a pawn, Charles managed to at least ensure this would be a doubled pawn and after exchanges the outcome was a draw.
Stuart was level on material and managed to exchange queens giving his white bishop more scope, but Allan had two open files to work with and had a slight edge. This proved enough to win in the end.
The last game to finish was a fine battle between Eric and Patrick. Eric was happy to reach a position where he had two minor pieces (bishop and knight) for a rook and pawn. Unfortunately he managed to get his two minor pieces uncoordinated and subsequently harried by the rook. Patrick found a nice resource with 26..g5 to pressure the bishop which was defending the knight. Before long the king and rook combined to force the win of the knight for a few pawns. It was still tricky for black to win but Patrick achieved this with a nice rook sacrifice for the bishop on move 49 which forced an immediate resignation. One of the black pawns was ensured to queen first.
