11 September 2023
The club is now open again for the 2023-24 season!
Four graded friendlies were played on Monday 11th September to help shake the cobwebs out.
William, João, Euan and Crawford elected to play a series of 15 minute games.
Graded Friendlies
White | Black | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Allan McDiarmid | 1751 | ½ - ½ | Charles Gunn-Russell | 1763 |
2 | Eric Smith | 1601 | 1 - 0 | Isaac Boyd | 1385 |
3 | Stuart McKinney | 1464 | 0 - 1 | Patrick Miller | 1413 |
4 | Mathew Boyd | 1255 | ½ - ½ | Tommy Li |
Eric won after Isaac blundered having played well up to that point.
Stuart’s king went for a long journey from the kingside to the queenside but fell to a forced checkmate in the end.
Congratulations to Tommy on playing his first longer format game at the club. He played a nice tactic against a knight on the edge of the board to gain a material advantage. Some later innacuracies allowed Mathew to fight back with a drawn endgame being reached.
Allan defended valiantly against Charles in a complicated endgame with a pawn on the 7th rank. With less than 2 minutes left on his clock Charles offered a draw in the position shown below. Black to play, the computer shows it is mate in 6 starting with 61..Re5! (the king trapped in the corner with weak bank rank is too much)
